How squash racquet string tension works

Squash racquet string tension is much lower than tennis tension. A typical squash range is 24–30 lb (10.9–13.6 kg), while tennis racquets are roughly 45–65 lb; the frames are built differently, so a squash frame must never be strung to tennis tensions.

Beginners and players wanting power commonly use 24–26 lb, most intermediate players sit around 26–28 lb, and advanced players wanting control commonly use 28–30 lb. These are general ranges from common practice, not a measured standard: feel is individual, and the manufacturer’s range printed on the frame or throat overrides this guide. Stringing outside it can void the warranty and crack the frame.

Multifilament is the squash standard because it is soft with good power and comfort. Thin 17 or 18 gauge gives more feel, bite and spin but breaks sooner; thicker 16 gauge lasts longer with less feel. Strings lose tension continuously after stringing, fastest in the first 24–48 hours, so a fresh job plays tighter than its number suggests.
